Families of NCCS: The Woods Family

When Maddi came home from district school the summer after Kindergarten and said she didn’t want to return, her mother, like any concerned parent, immediately began searching for a better option. What she discovered was Nashville Classical, a school that would not only meet her daughter’s academic needs but also nurture her emotionally and socially in ways that the previous school had not.
“I really didn’t know we could make it work, we live in Goodlettsville, but she loves it there,” said Maddi’s mom, reflecting on their decision to look beyond the local district schools. Nashville Classical has no priority zone, which was essential for the Woods family. Even if there wasn’t a good school in their neighborhood, they could still find Nashville Classical and enroll in it.
The turning point came when Maddi’s mom stumbled upon the school’s Facebook page. The warmth of the curriculum and the smaller class sizes instantly stood out. “I loved the way they were teaching,” she said, noting that the larger class sizes in her daughter’s previous school had left her feeling disconnected. “And there’s plenty of adults around to give attention to every child.”
The decision to enroll Maddi was made easier by the school’s community-oriented atmosphere. “There’s just a sense of community, and everyone is so family-oriented,” she explained. This sentiment is echoed by Maddi herself, who loves participating in the school’s programs and events, including the annual Black History program and various field trips. “She just loves the ability to be involved,” her mom added, proud of how Maddi has embraced the school’s rich extracurricular offerings.
Maddi’s first year with her former school had its challenges, including bullying. However, at Nashville Classical, things have been different. “She’s able to learn without distractions,” her mom said, citing the school’s focus on individualized attention and its commitment to ensuring that all students stay caught up — even on days when they miss school.

The family’s experience with Nashville Classical has been so positive that they’ve continued to stay, year after year. The smaller class sizes, caring staff, and sense of community have only solidified their decision to make it their school of choice. “It’s just really awesome,” her mom said.
For families who may be unfamiliar with charter schools or hesitant about school choice, Maddi’s mom has this advice: “I always encourage all parents to come. Anyone I talk to, anytime I hear someone say they’re having problems, I say, ‘sign them up at Nashville Classical.’”
As for Maddi, her hopes for a better school experience have been more than fulfilled. “The chance to do kid things — field day, field trips — has been amazing for her,” her mom shared. “At Nashville Classical, it’s not just about learning; it’s about growing as a person and experiencing the joys of childhood, all while being part of a supportive, welcoming community.”
Nashville Classical is free, public, and open to all and we hope you’ll come visit and learn more!
